Packaging and Shipping your Antique Radio
Many people have asked the basic question- how do I ship an item as delicate as an antique radio without breaking it in a million pieces? Lets face it the drivers in the shipping industry don’t really care what is in the box. Whatever you do don’t put a “Fragile” Sticker on the box. That’s a great way for the shipping industry’s Union Dockworkers to single out your package during a labor struggle and just throw your box like they were shooting a basketball. Being in the shipping business for over 10 years now I have seen the very popular “Handle With Care” sticker on boxes. These are looked for and end up part of a fun game of Joe...

THE RESTORATION

Author:
Kent Levine

In photos 1&2 (above) the general poor condition of this radio can be seen.    Also in photo #1 the separated shelf for the radio chassis can be seen.

Photos 3&4 (above) are very clear views of the heavy rust and corrosion over the chassis. The tubes, shields, tuning gang and dial were removed and the main body was wire brushed.  Naval Jelly was used as the rust remover.  The tuning gang and dial were also hand cleaned and all parts were primed and painted and returned to the chassis. After the physical restoration, the electronic restoration was completed with a complete re-cap and new power cord.  The radio was powered up and came to life needing only tuning to become one of the better playing radios I own.

Speaker photo #5 (above) continues the demerstaion of heavy rust that had taken over this radio. The speaker frame was sand blasted, primed, and painted. It was then sent to Antique speaker repair for the Top level Re-coneing done by Hank Brazeal.

As for photos 6, 7, and 8 (above) after inspection of the cabinet I decided that complete disassembly was needed for the restoration. After removal of about 57 wood screws and a few good blows with a 2# dead blow hammer the disassembly was complete.  And found that the speaker board, chassis shelf and the two end panels would also have to be replaced.

Please see one of the remaining end panels with this display.

Then after replacement parts were cut, reassembly started with the base, side supports and hand fitting of the new wood.

And lots of clamping!

Once free of the clamps, any old finish was removed and the cabinet was given the final sanding, stain and lacquer finish.

THE REST OF THE STORY

One day at the Grand Daddy Antique mall in Burlington
I saw a flyer for an estate auction in Greensboro.

So I went … while there, I saw some radios, but nothing to write home about. Then about 30 minutes into the auction I picked out 3 men just arriving asking where are the old radios.  I overheard someone tell them about a radio in the barn and saw them head that way.  So, I followed.  Out there, we all saw this Zenith 6-S-275 that had been in the open air barn for about 25+ years.

One of these gentlemen pulls out a pocket VOM and pronounces with the voice of a Supreme Court judge that the field coil is good. The other gentlemen gave the wood cabinet the once over and said it wasn’t too bad.  The last gentleman, who was with his son, says “hey all the knobs are here”.  Then with a not to impressed look they return to the house where the auction is taking place.   Finding a good spot in the conversation, I introduced myself.  I met Kirk Cline Bruce Hutchins and Jack Bailiff to whom first  I would like to say Thank You for telling me about the CC-AWA and its meetings and all of the antique radio activity in this area.  2nd for becoming good friends and 3rd most of all, for going home by the time the auction was up to this radio for I was the sole bidder.
I also wish to Thank Larry Dowell for helping me answer various technical questions during this restoration.
