Packaging and Shipping your Antique Radio
Many people have asked the basic question- how do I ship an item as delicate as an antique radio without breaking it in a million pieces? Lets face it the drivers in the shipping industry don’t really care what is in the box. Whatever you do don’t put a “Fragile” Sticker on the box. That’s a great way for the shipping industry’s Union Dockworkers to single out your package during a labor struggle and just throw your box like they were shooting a basketball. THE RESTORATION
THE RESTORATION In photos 1&2 the general poor condition of this radio can be seen.    Also in photo #1 the separated shelf for the radio chassis can be seen. Photos 3&4 are very clear views of the heavy rust and corrosion over the chassis. The tubes, shields, tuning gang and dial were removed and the main body was wire brushed.  Naval Jelly was used as the rust remover.  The tuning gang and dial were also hand cleaned and all parts were primed and painted and returned to the chassis. After the physical restoration, the electronic restoration was completed with a complete re-cap and new power cord.  The radio was powered up and came to...

Interview with Tom Bourcy

Interview with Tom Bourcy
Tom has been known to fix radios that not many others can repair. He has the knowledge and passion for the restoration of these timeless pieces of our history. Antique Radios are a fun hobby that comes easy to Tom. He enjoys the challenge of a tough-dog that others might have given up on.

Q. www.antiqueradioguide.com
How did you first get interested in Antique Radios?
A. It started back when I received my grandfathers 1933 Philco 89 Lowboy. He had purchased it new but by the time I received this Radio it had fallen into a state of great disrepair. Seeing this as a Family Heirloom, I decided to restore the radio as it was my first antique tube radio.

You have been fixing old radios for a long time. Has there ever been a particular make or model Radio that you thought you could not repair? Or do you figure out how to make every Model a great player?
A.

What has been your favorite restoration Project?
A.  One of my favorite restoration projects was restoring a Zenith 6-S-275. You can read more about this restoration on this web site.

What is needed in your opinion to start fixing Antique Radios? Total cost and setup to do this properly.
A.  To properly start repairing/restoring antique radios you need knowledge of basic electronic theory and the ability to read schematics. Then you need to be comfortable doing basic woodworking and refinishing. The total cost and setup would include having: a neat orderly place to work including a work bench, voltmeter (this is the one item I would not scrimp on. Your meter should have the capabilities of a FLUKE 87), signal generator, soldering station, basic hand tools to include nut drivers, screw drivers, pliers, wire cutters, replacement parts to include, resistors, capacitors, power cords, lamps, and volume controls. Total Cost for electronic restoration $200.00 – $500.00. Then for start up of cabinet restoration the following items; wood glue, stripper, stain, and spray lacquer. The total cost for the beginning setup is approximately $100.00

How long does each restoration take? Does it depend on the size?
A. The first time element would be to determine what level the restoration needs to go to.
1. Just making it play, this would be a “REPAIR” not a “RESTORATION”.
2. Restoration of the electronics, which would restore “RELIABILITY” to the set.
Another task would be to replace all paper and electrolytic capacitors and any out of tolerance resistors. Then determine if the chassis needs preservation for rust, also are there rubber grommets that need replacing?

Q. www.antiqueradioguide.com
Where do you find the Tubes for these old Radios? Where do you find the Knobs as well?
A. Tom

Q. www.antiqueradioguide.com
Can Collectors ship radios to you to look at to fix? Do you offer this type of service for out of town collectors?
A. Tom

Q. www.antiqueradioguide.com
How did you train yourself on the cosmetic part of the restoration of antique radios? Keeping the original finish vs refinishing the cabinet, and making decisions on original speaker grill cloth?

Being in the shipping business for over 10 years now I have seen the very popular “Handle With Care” sticker on boxes. These are looked for and end up part of a fun game of Joe Montana to Jerry Rice for a touchdown right on the loading dock. This goes for all carriers in the shipping industry. It’s OK. I actually like all the carriers. Lets just go over some rules to ship anything that absolutely cant break. Like your antique Radio you just sold on Ebay. There are two Freight situations. Your smaller boxes and your larger boxes. Smaller boxes will go USPS or UPS, DHL Fedex type of service. The Freight side of the shipping industry will possibly handle larger Radios. In both cases you will need to insure your items. Insuring your antique radio does not mean that if it is damaged it will automatically get paid for by the carrier. That is a big myth. YOU WILL NEED TO PACK THE ITEM PROPERLY. Larger Radios- Over 100 lbs and possibly 3 feet tall. (Floor Models) I will make it quick about the larger items. You will need a create – If you don’t know how to create the item then go to a pack and ship store that can handle it. Don’t even think about putting your Larger Radio on an LTL truck without the proper...
